What happens to old avatars?

Ain't this boogie a mess
Does anyone display their old avatars after they post a new one? I remember finding an old thread discussing a piece of gear that I had some interest in, and one of the posters mentioned having it in his avatar. The current avatar showed a person with some very nice equipment, but it wasn't audio gear. One will occasionally see other mentions of avatars in older threads. The current threads have many creative members showing off their Haloween spirit in their avatars. Some members, like Onepixel and Art K., regularly show some interesting art work in theirs.

I think it would be nice to be able to look at someone's profile to see a history of their avatars. I suppose one could include that in their albums, and maybe some already do that. Any of you out there who save their used avatars, want to let us know and show them off.

Maybe someone would also like to provide a punch line to:

Old avatars never die, they just ___________.

I don't think you can see an old one until the person starts using it again... I believe once you change them out it overwrites the old file..

I rotate out Miles Davis avatars with one exception, I occasionally throw in a wonderful Lila Downs pic. Every avatar I display will be seen again at some point.

I understand that, but the avatar originally comes from somewhere - a photo, a sketch, etc. I'm just suggesting that it would be interesting to see a gallery of old avatars if anyone wanted to start saving their source photos in an album.

Main point is, it's fun to see the level of creativity that goes into the avatars, and it might be enjoyable to see a retrospective of that creativity. This comes from one who has borrowed the creativity of another to create his avatar.

P.S. The thread title is misleading. My only defense is that I was listening to Cake* at that time, and I was inspired to use a question.

*"When you sleep, where do your fingers go?"

Whenever I see a real nice or catchy avatar I hit "Save Picture As" and keep a picture of it .
I would never use them, I just think some look good enough to save.

On the subject -They are written over and they are gone. I've changed my avatar 3 times and the old picture is no longer anywhere on AK.
If you have an avatar ---before you change it save your old one on your computer.

Here are most of mine.

Onepixel, it looks like the same artist is responsible for many of those - the woman with the ukelele, the mermaid, the Einstein, the van and the hula dancer. Would you identify the artist? Were you the photographer for the first two? Thanks for posting them.

James Brown?! The Apple 1984 ad has been tweaked. Can you spot it?

The gear pics I took, couple of the paintings I did. The "other" artist... I'm not giving away my favorite source. :D

Bad eyes, laptop, small picture and other excuses, but is it the ipod attached at the girl's waist?

P.S. Nice painting of Jimi.

P.P.S. Because the ones I mentioned before all appear to be the same artist, I'll go with the bottom right corner and the one two rows above it as creations of Onepixel?

D-Ray
