What is the fastest you've been on a motorcycle or car?

Have you even seen the video of the late Sabine Schmitz (RIP :() in a Ford Transit van at the Nurburgring? She was the "Queen of the 'Ring."

I've done the ring a dozen times, mostly in the late 1980's, the last time was in 2004 driving my 2002 Dodge Neon... it was plenty fast enough in the straights, a bit of under steer that was easy to correct by easing off the throttle (FWD), but the brakes were not up to the task, they got hot and faded badly, so the last 1/2 lap I had to drive under 70 mph... IIRC my time was about 12 minutes.

That must have been awesome. A very long track. I've only done tracks in CA. Some autocross. Back in the days when I had a BMW 2002Ti.

Here's another video of Sabine in a 911 GT3R on the 'Ring.

Not sure what is the fastest (ever) for me in a vehicle piloted by me, but it was (I think) in my uncle's (and later mine) '64 Dodge Polara "Lightweight" w/ 426 Max Wedge, etc.

Hey, has @grillebilly seen / commented @ this thread? He's been piloting Super Stock and maybe Pro Stock (Funnies a/or rails even?) @ drag strips for decades.

Rick?

The complete Ring is about 21 km long (13 miles) and it is indeed a wild ride: there is one shallow hill where the road turns sharply and drops away after the crest... usually good for a wipe out if you don't know it is there ! I could get up to 100mph on the straights easily, slowed to 30 mph in a lot of the tight curves, but once my brakes were toast I had to keep it down to 65-70 mph on straights and slow down by down shifting.

I had to replace the front rotors and pads after that run (and flush the fluid), the rotors were warped and the pads were crumbling at the edges.

The fastest I've been in a car in the states was way back in 1972, when I worked in the machine shop that built the Mopar big block V-8s (383 and 440's) for the NM State Police... I went for a "spin" with Officer Storment after we had installed a new 440 in his 1970 Monaco (this one had the lights in the grille and back window, no cherries on the roof) he got it up to a touch over 150 mph and it still had some go left in her.

That particular car was special in that it had a three foot long, 3" diameter pipe filled with mercury (about 2/3 full) bolted on the trunk floor to help keep it level during cornering. of course it had the heavy duty suspension and brakes and the 440 during break in on the chassis dyno made over 500 ft pounds of torque and close to that in horsepower (IIRC, about 480hp). This car was made with one purpose in mind, to catch the Mercedes Gull Wing coupe that the guy who controlled all the liquor licenses in the state drove. He went as fast as he wanted to wherever/whenever, but they finally nailed him north of Socorro with this car.
Strange thing, all the Mopar State Police cars had white plastic rimmed steering wheels so that they wouldn't get hot in the sun.

My Bimmer is electronically limited by BMW at 255 kph.
I've done a 1400km trip that's supposed to take 14 hours in 9.5 hours once. You do the math.
Made possible only because the autobahn in Germany was nearly completely empty on the evening and night of December 25th that year.
I passed less than 10 cars in total during the German section of that trip and raced another madman in a white AMG for about an hour and a half.

Planned? No.
Mad? Yes.
Fun? Hell yeah. Never felt such an adrenaline rush in my life.
Would I do it a second time? Hell no. Whilst never dangerous, it was insane.
I go racing now a couple of times a year to face the insanity of my inner speed demon.

ps - I could go through my past PMs (Conversation ~ Direct Messages) w/ Rick, I know he shared times & trap speeds w/ me, but let's see if he drops into this thread and delivers the goods himself.
Hey everyone. I've been drag racing in one way or another for 50 years but not on a professional level. Way too poor for that but have done a lot of engines that were. My cars have always been street legal, save open exhaust and slicks, and built with longevity as a priority. Also raced my first street bike, a 72 XLCH, in the all Harley Drag Association. It was slow by today's standards but fast enough to set a couple national records the first two times I raced it. Street class 1/8 mile.
The fastest my Nova has been is 9 flat in the 1/4 mile at 148 MPH. I took gear ratio out of it recently so it should be faster now, hope to take it out and find out soon. It is all steel with stock interior, 540 cubic inch normally aspirated, single 4bbl. Here's a vid of it at a Top Sportsman race in Maryland.

Cool enough that I can forgive the video being taken in "portrait" mode :) (my pet peeve)

My '62 Triumph TR4 would do 100 MPH at redline
My modified '67 Mustang 390 GT with highway gears, autocross suspension, warmed up mill, went God knows how fast racing a 340 Demon one night out in the country, the tach redlined, I absolutely walked away from the MOPAR, but the car started floating, so I backed it down.
Redline in fifth gear in my slightly warmed over '76 KZ900, man I loved the song of that engine on the Kerker race pipe!
129 MPH rev limited on my Yamaha Turbo...

All this was done decades ago, I drive pretty much the speed limit, and very cautiously, as at 73 my reactions are shite.

So, that BMW Bavaria I mentioned earlier? Owned by a college roommate, John. Had a bigger-than-stock cam (you could hear a bit of lope at idle), and some other mods, done by the former owner, who was a former BMW F1 mechanic. John bought the car up near his home in Vermont, and drove it back to Atlanta. On his way back, early on a Sunday morning, he called us just as he was getting to the city limits of Chattanooga (Ooltewah TN).

FIFTY SEVEN minutes later, he was sitting in our driveway, in NW Atlanta, just north of Georgia Tech.

That's about 110 miles.

An AVERAGE of 116MPH. Including the time he had to spend on exit ramps, stop lights and other such slow-downs.

I know that it was capable of 140MPH, as we measured it over a set of known-accurate mile markers. Five miles in 128 seconds...

Regards,
Gordon.

My 2002Ti had a hotter German cam (not sure if it was Alpina) and higher compression pistons. It got to the point where I couldn't run it on 93 octane. It would ping like crazy with the stock ignition. At that point, I would have had to go to an ECU and an O2 sensor to make the thing reliable.

Top speed was maybe a little better than that of a 2002Tii, but the midrange torque was muy sabroso! No downshifting needed to pass.

It is amazing how many miles you cover very quickly when "Haulin' Arse". I'm too old to go fast anymore (reflexes are not what they were), 80 mph on the interstate is plenty fast for me.

Got somewhere over 145mph (pegged) in my ‘69 GTO when I was about 20. Next week I gently turned a corner and dropped a ball joint, we’re all in god’s hands aren’t we lol?

Lost my Rover for a week when I passed an officer going the other direction up a hill at a *somewhat* high speed. Had been following a train of semi trailers for miles, Sunday Summit was the only passing lane for a long way yet, and some smartass in a Mercedes was giving me grief so I dusted him.

Excuses, excuses lol, learned a very expensive lesson and turned the speed warning on when I got it back a week and several thousand dollars later. Also learned how much a 200km cab ride costs 10 at night in a small town…

Wow! You are lucky to have survived that one! A friend had his suspension drop out of the car at speed. A large part dug into the ground, flipping the car over.

He had a two-week stay in a hospital to fix broken bones.
