What is the worst thing someone ever did to a stereo you owned?

Flinx

Scrounger
When I was a teenager (about 30 years ago) I did some work for a guy and he paid me with a telescope and a stereo he salvaged from a fire he cleaned up after. The stereo was of the tube type and at the time I did not know much about them, but it worked and sounded good, even though I had attached a couple of car stereo speakers I found in a dumpster to it (we was really poor back then).

I think it was a Fisher 50B. It was slightly singed and smelled like a forest fire. When I went off to college I packed it away in my closet at home. At some point several months later I came back and went looking for it to put it in my dorm room. It was gone. If I remember correctly my Mom threw it away to make room for Christmas decorations. To say I was not happy was an understatement.

To say I was not happy was an understatement. I have never forgiven her for doing that.

30 years is a long time to be mad at your mom. I'd say get over it.

I had a son of a friend melt my original Ohm F drivers by cranking up some rap music. Cost a pretty penny to get them refurbed, but they're back in the regular rotation now.

bs

A family friend got druck at Our Christmas get together and bumped into My stereo stand.
He knocked My vintage Technics Receiver to the floor while it was Pluged in and it started sparking and smoking from the top vents...DONE!
It snatched really hard on the speaker wires almost snatching Them off the Shelf...But I replaced the Wires and Saved them.
(Man, He was 2 seconds from a Cruzah Spinkick )

My wife managed to completely knock the stylus off my Audio Technica 14s cartridge. This was back when I wasn't making much money and the purchase of good audio equipment was something I had to save and save for....

BTW I can somewhat relate to the OP coming back home to find a valued item missing. About 10 years ago I decided to retrieve a large double neon clock that my parents had been storing for me. When told them I wanted to take it home with me I got a blank look from my mom and dad. Then she said, "we sold it at a yard sale". For a moment I thought she was kidding but the look said it all. It was gone. :sigh:

I said "mom, that thing was worth several hundred dollars" and that brought a horrific look to her face..... I'm suspecting they probably put it out for $25. or something like that. I really didn't want to know. But .... all is forgiven... it has to be that way.... they're my parents. That one still hurts though.

If you're in the Huber Heights/Dayton area and you bought a nice old clock that said "Capital" on the face and has white/green neon for cheap at a yard sale.... it's mine... well.... it was....

I was about 17 when I bought my first serious speakers, the MB Quarts in my sig. The money I paid for them was a real fortune for me at the time. (Come to think of it, it is still my most expensive piece of gear.)

The day I got them home my best friend came to visit. After not paying attention for a minute, I turned around to see the guy poking the silk dome midrange with his finger, like a toddler would do.

Thank god no harm was done and after I was done screaming at him all was well. Other than this, my friends and relatives have all been very respectful towards my gear:thmbsp:

I can't tell you how many nice speakers at thrift stores I have seen with holes in them 2 feet from the floor, from and evil little ankle bighter.

People are more important then stereo gear. I'd get over it eventually if my mother threw my gear out. Then again she knows it's my hobby and that it makes me happy.

Now, back on topic, the worst thing anybody has ever done to my gear? Well my lady friend plays dubstep over it from time to time. There's reasons though why she gets away with it :D

All is forgiven

But back in 77 I was 17, mom was pissed at me for not "listening" when I was told to do something...took a hammer to my Marantz 2220B...eyyyyaaahhhh

Love ya mom but a kick to the jewels would have been kinder...lol

My nephew bounced a basketball over my turntable while it was playing and destroyed a Shure V15 type III needle in the process.

Landlord

No one actually ever even touched my stuff, although my wife has taken to turning things down or off when I am away for a while....I'm going to have to watch that crap.

The ONE thing though, was in an apartment where there was a water stain on the ceiling when I moved in and they said, "Oh yeah, there is a small leak in the roof. We need to fix that". Quite a while later I came home and the roof had decided to leak A LOT and it went across the ceiling TO my stereo (Marantz 2275, Pioneer SX-6000, Technics SL-1300, Pioneer SG-9500, etc....I am the original owner since new). I HAD everything well away from the initial stain. Everythings was soaking wet, except the speakers.

They got a nasty call and everything went to the shop for dry out and inspection and any repair and they got the bill.

How about selling your dirt bike for practically nothing and keeping the money?

Or "borrowing" $230 from an 11 year old's paper route money then claiming it was rent? Rent for an 11 year old?

Opening a credit card in your daughters name, maxing it out and not paying it back?

I got more.

I digress! so no more comments on me ole mum.

I see. I cease argument.

My daughters friend knocked over some Polks years ago and busted them up. Luckily she was ok and didn't get hurt but the Polks were pretty banged. We never let that kid spend the night again.

Is her name Cruella de Vil?

Yikes - I got nothin' to beat that.

My wife made the mistake of looking at my audio system the wrong way ONCE! The sound of me singing, "The head of my wife goes thump, thump, thump,...all the way down the stairs" took care of that.

No one has ever messed with my stereo.

Once though, a roommate's girlfriend shook up my lava lamp, and that's not a metaphor.
All the large globs broke up into small blobs and they would not re-join each other ever again.
Twas a pity and I had to throw that beloved lava lamp into the dumpster.

I forgave her though. Life's to short. Bitch.
