What's up with this Nak CDC-3A ?

34 pin ribbon cable protruding from the back of the unit.

I thought I was getting no power because there were no lights on at all. Then I pressed the reject button and the magazine came out.

I used the headphone jack and pressed play and everything worked normally, you could hear it but not see it.

I've taken some pictures and would like to know what's what.

Thanks folks.Screenshot_20260212-185152.jpg

End-user hack. No manufacturer would route a cable through the gap between the cabinet pieces. Possibly they were experimenting with some sort of automation. Do the wires in the ribbon connect to the front panel control board?

Maybe they didn't like the lime green display so they disconnected it. I don't know but I just watched a video of that player and that is some bright green. One does wonder what they were up to of course.

I wonder if what I have is something like what is described in this article.

I'm wondering if it was a custom interface job to use with a retail display of some sort, or maybe some background music system that had an external control panel. Have seen stuff kind of like this before made to hook up a panel of membrane switches to select samples of music at a listening station. Not sure why it would effect the main display, unless that had been intentionally disconnected, or damaged somehow.
