Was it insured? If so, go to Fedex and bitch to them about it. If not, I'd still bitch to them about it.

I have had more problem with Fedex than any other shipping company , the manage to dystroy a cast aluminum frame of a speaker and bend the armature in a car altenator .

Keep all the pieces. There is a guy who made a dial for me for an early McIntosh unit as I had the complete broken one. It was $55.00 and looked perfect. I'll try to find his name for you.

What a shame. It seems like it's a crap shoot with all the delivery services. I've had the best luck with USPS. Good luck with finding a replacement glass.

I feel for you as it pains me to see classics biting the dust.

Yes a claim might be in order, but it will only compensate the monetary outlay, not true value of the piece.

Regards,
Mike

I'm worried about FedEx. I'm getting 4 lamps for my projector, and are glass. I worry they are going to get broken in shipping.

Don't throw away the pieces. Try and put them back together and save it. You might be able to find someone that can silk screen you a new one after all it's just a piece of glass with paint. Or you may be able to make a decal with your printer There is company that makes decal sheets for your printer. Google will find it for you.

I love Pilot gear and it sucks that yours got mishandled but I bet you can fix it.
Also you might check out some old radio restoration company's some do custom dial reproductions. This one might be able to help you.

man oh man that drives me nuts. the unit was assembled, shipped, and carefully cared for for 50 years without breaking the glass. in one careless moment that legacy is squandered. I'm sorry that happened to you.

i had to buy a fixer upper just for the glass...I told the seller to keep the rest!.

Funny...I ask shippers to ship via USPS because is the least expensive from USA to PR (same rates as lower 48). UPS and Fedex are simply too expensive for us. Some shippers give me the excuse that they don't like to ship via USPS because they might mishandle the package. Well, I have read more horror stories about Fedex and UPS, mostly Fedex, than from USPS.

Items have to be packed with thought, making sure the force will not transfer to the most vulnerable points. It's obvious that was not done in this case. The picture below shows a 70 lb Mcintosh amp, the whole faceplate was glass. The packing was designed so the impact would transfer through to the side boards, after being dispensed by plywood. Nothing short of a sledge hammer blow to the center would break it.

USPS is the only way I ship. Never had a problem.
Haven't had a problem with stuff coming to me from fedex but it is usually very small stuff.

UPS, they won't even cover damage when they package it.

fedex doesnt offer insurance at least on ground. whats the seller gonna do, not much. i was an ebay seller for 10 years and can ship. this was done right.

it looks like it took a hard fall to a corner. pisses me off. i wish the military would ship landmines via fedex!

i hope vendo81 comes through. i saved the glass pieces.

If it took a hard fall on one corner and sustained damage, then the packing was inadequate. Period.

Packages fall all the time. There's no rule that the package must land flat, any more than there is a rule that the toast always has to land peanut butter side up.

Sorry, but that's it.

Well then you probably also know that if an item doesn't arrive in the same condition described in the ebay ad you have the right to file a SNAD claim against the seller and get your money back. Doesn't make a difference if insurance was offered and declined, paid for, or not even a possibility. Normally in cases like this you show the seller the damage, explain how much it costs to replace the glass and work out some sort of refund to offset your monetary loss. It's not your fault the glass is broken, why take 100% of the loss?
