Bose 601 II journey...

Horray for the array!

Wow... look at the driver cluster on those 601s!

Horray for the array of speakers delivering that combined sound:yes:.

I have 301s, they perform magnificently... now twenty five + old... I always wondered what makes them so efficient? Sure it has to do with the same typical setup and crossovers.

I did find the original manual for my 301s, recently.. was surprised the speaker unit is classified as a "loudspeaker"? I know the drivers can be different for loudspeaker design for a given cabinet design.. but have not seen where in designs of old they used "non-typical" drivers.

Beginning to wonder... did "loudspeaker" then mean a unit made to operate with more "voice" or were they referring to playing to "higher volumes"? Or neither... just a fancy term for that speaker design:scratch2:?

This is not my experince with the 601.. as they track off walls.

This seems to make a lot of sense, when you consider the terms first use...

My experience, so far, is 601's can get really loud, and with only 60w that's saying something. Though according to the meters on my STA-2500 and the meters on my SA-2001 I rarely hit peaks over 5w. And it's loud. Since two different amplification sources give me the same approximate readings I'm assuming that they are close enough.

Running a newer Amp, oh boy...

You all know how I enjoy my speakers, but they just upped another notch.

A few weeks ago I picked up a Pioneer SA-8800. More on that here...

Boy are these speakers really showing their prowess now. Bigger bass (not boomy mind you). More authority than before. I didn't have these hooked up to anything with more than 70wpc. Even though the 8800 is "rated" 80wpc, you'd swear it was more. Boy this amp has taken these speakers to a new level.

Can't wait to try the 901 and DSS9 speakers on this amp. Clean, powerful, really nice.
 
I suspected that the higher current would make these multiple drivers sing a bit more. I've noticed that the Carver 900 I have my Bose 601 II's on doesn't make them really purr like the other 165wpc stuff I have (1250, M504, rebuilt 9090db that clips at 161 wpc)

How are those DSS9's coming along? I seem to have missed their progress. Get everything sorted out?

Surprisingly the "repairs" have held up well. In fact, the same repairs were done to my S-910 almost a year ago and they've been doing HT duty since. I've thrashed them, as have the grand kids (not intentionally of course). No issues to speak of and the rubber surrounds seem to be working out just fine. Should anyone be interested in repairing cracked/damaged cones...

I own a nice SA-8800, it really brings out the best in speakers, but I can't attest to any Bose models since i don't own any. :no:

I'm ready to sell off some receivers now. I'm also going to unload some speakers too. It was fun, but I need to whittle things down to a more manageable selection. Just the best of the best (of my stuff anyway). Also, I still have it in my head about down sizing. Our home was large enough for having children, but all the kids have been out of the house some time and we have no need for so much space. I'd like a smaller house and much larger garage. Need to get busy with the "big" toys.
 
Had a member ask about schematics. Thought I'd post here for future reference for all. I do not real the source.
