Picked this up today at a yard sale for $10. I don't know much about it but came with owners manual and it sounds great with my warfdale w70d mark II.

Any feedback on this would be appreciated.

Folks here love em. Search will find all kinds of love for these Sony units.

Well bought. Bust it open and carefully clean the dial glass for that new look. Careful the lettering is like decals and will wash off.

What a steal!

Here are the specs if you haven't looked them up yet:

Power output: 60 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo)

Frequency response: 15Hz to 120kHz

Total harmonic distortion: 0.2%

Input sensitivity: 1.5mV (MM), 170mV (DIN), 170mV (line)

Signal to noise ratio: 70dB (MM), 90dB (DIN), 90dB (line)

Output: 170mV (line), 20mV (DIN), 3.5V (Pre out)

Speaker load impedance: 4Ω to 16Ω

Dimensions: 483 x 145 x 405mm

Weight: 15.5kg

Year: 1969

Sony made some great quality units back then. I personally love the build quality of my hrt-6055. Too bad it has severe distortion out of both channels haha

I am bummed. It just stopped working. Started humming out of the right channel. I turned it off and tightened up the speaker terminals and when I turned it on again nothing at all. No output on any channel. Changed to the auxiliary speaker output and still nothing.

?????

Very nice find. And it has the wood case too.

The balance control lever should face down. It's easy to remove the volume knob, rotate the balance control ring 180 degreees and reinstall the volume knob.

Very nice and a steal at $10. IMHO,it's one of the very best receivers Sony ever made. Also, had a huge MRRP of $700 back in 1969.
I purchased a mint one recently for £100 which I consider a bargain.

Inside of the glass dial most definitely, but there shouldn't be any problem cleaning from the outside.
Also, good news is that the lettering on the faceplate is indented unlike the later cheaper STR-6055 etc.

Any ideas as to the issue I mentioned earlier?
I am bummed it stopped working.

I have a feeling it may be something on the input amp side of things. If it was output I would think it would be just one side that failed.

Interesting all these folks are all happy with your 10 buck unit and they just missed the part about it not working anymore.

I suspect the old tired original caps in it have died. Probably time for a recap but it is best to repair it before recapping it. The PS is probably suspect as that is where many units have trouble after all these years 45 years is a long time for a unit to not get new caps.

Sorry to hear it stopped working. Don't know what to say about the hum other than to carefully inspect the boards for any obviously leaking caps. Although probably not a cure, you could also thouroughly "deoxit" the switches and pots and see if that helps.

The only issue I've had with my unit is with the power switch which started to fail. The lights would flicker and the sound would cut in and out but I was able to locate the proper replacement switch and fix it.

If you have a trust worthy tech nearby, it would be worth getting it checked out. Good luck (and let me know if you want to sell the case!).

that is quite a steal at 10 bucks. a lot of vintage sony gear lovers rate that only behind the sony 6060 as the best receiver made in that era. been looking for one myself.

second that. even if you put in 150 bucks in repair that would still be less than what it has been going for in ebay. an investment that would be well worth it.

sony faceplate letterings from that era are actually robust. i've cleaned the faceplates of a 7065, 7055, and 6055 with both warm water and soap and bluemagic and not one letter got messed up. i was more fearful when i cleaned up my marantz 2270's faceplate. i have to say the recessed lettering adds to the peace of mind when cleaning up.

good luck. hope you can get it up and running again real soon.
