Altec 605b Duplex, now what?

Get you a box for them. They sound incredible.

Yeah, I would love a pair of those myself. Definitely in my top 5 when it comes to full-rangers I'd like to own, along with similar-era models from Wharfedale, Goodmans, and University (If I could only choose two, it would likely be the 605 and the Wharfedale Super 12 from the same era).

Boxes, biguns'!
Not too big, 605's don't have the motor strength/cone control of a 604. But, the smaller motors put the voice coils closer to being on the same vertical plane which gives them a better natural phase relationship making them a tad more coherent in the XO region than the 604.

got crossovers? If not: http://home.earthlink.net/~jmarkwart/

Congrats! Got any pics showing why they need reconing?

Aside from the two holes that were "repaired" (from the back of the cone it looks like fix-a-flat) the other driver has a 1/2" tear through the surround. I'm sure that this could all be fixed, but I want them to be purty. :D

So, I'm assuming you used the 605a/b variant of the crossover? Does he sell the crossovers or just publish the schematic?

Yep, I used the 605 w/MF compensation schematic. I'm not sure if Markwart sells them or not. I hadn't ever built a crossover point-to-point before, and with a little instruction from wardsweb, it was pretty straightforward.

So you got those. I am just now finishing mounting my Ampex drivers into nice vintage cabinets. My first attempt

I have '57 Fender grill cloth on the way

Good luck MarantzFan

The 605 a or b is a great speaker and can crank out major volume when it needs to.
Either use a large properly designed cab or a moderate sized box with a sub.

Spoke with Bill at GPA yesterday and it sounds like reconing isn't going to be that expensive, so I will definitely be going that route.

As for crossovers, I think I'll build a pair of the markwart ones mentioned above, so if someone has a picture/sketch it would be nice to get some ideas for łayout and such.

Cabinets, I'm leaning towards a 620 or possibly the billfort design. A local AK member with outstanding woodworking ability may be helping me out with those. Are the billfort cabinets much mire tricky to layout?

Photos. :)

Edit: Aparently I need to learn how to post photos from my iPhone, only one of five attached and its upside down!

Edit: Got it fixed on my laptop. Ugh.

Alright. After freeing up some funds I had tied up in other extraneous gear I am now ready to move forward on these. I have already begun ordering in parts to build the markwart crossovers with mf eq. Also, I will be shipping out the drivers to GPA for reconing this week.

Now the question is which cabinets are best suited for the 605b's? Watt's cabinets look pretty slick and seem to be a proven design plus they have a grill to keep curious little fingers away from the drivers. I'm also contemplating the Stonehenge cabinets as well. Are there any sonic advantages to the Stonehenge design over Watt's cabinets or are they just aesthetically different?

Parts are starting to come in now.

For the crossovers, I am going with Jantzen Air Core Inductors, Mills Resistors and Kimber Capacitors. All in all, about a $275 in parts.

I've typically used Daytons or Solens, these Kimbers are the priciest capacitors I have ever got to play with but Markwart strongly suggested them on his website so that's what I am going to use.

Drivers will be going out to GPA tomorrow for rebuild. :thmbsp:

One more question; how do I deal with the "ribs" on the back of the woofer (see photo above) when I go to mount it on the baffle? Am I going to need to rear mount it?
