Finally able to say "no"

It's been awhile since I've had any extra dollars - even a couple - and it's also been awhile since I've seen any decent vintage gear in the local thrifts. Today, I went out looking for LPs (found a bunch, too). But I saw and passed by...

KLH 38 - Interesting-looking KLH speakers. Two-way, with what appeared to be a typical 8-inch acoustic suspension from the old KLH Six days, fabric surround, etc. The tweeters are odd; perfectly circular in the baffle, no mounting that I could see from the front. Small screen over the tweets, but not a square screen like other vintage tweeters of the era; it fit snugly over the circular cut-out and appeared to be packed with cotton? Anyway, you can't see the tweeters; just the screen and the white packing under it. Weird. Marked at $19.99 for the pair, but one of the cabs had some issues. So I passed.

Boston Acoustics A40 - both woofers needed refoaming. First generation. Marked at 12.99. I passed.

Pilot solid state receiver - no model number I could find. Early transistor, the output transistors are mounted in a metal cage on the back like early Fisher transistor amps are. Wooden case, which had taken a bang on one corner. Marked at $9.99. I passed.

I'm actually kind of pleased with myself. I have a basement FULL of speakers, and the ones I saw had issues I don't feel like taking on right now.

So I got my LP records and came home. And I will NOT obsess over the speakers I did not buy! :)

@Wigwam...
Man... take a loved one out for a nice dinner and a good movie with that money.
Have some fun.

I know how you are feeling my man.

I pass on gear now because one either needs a warehouse or a retail store. You get to a point when enough is enough.

I have to say I'd have trouble passing up the BA 40's. The rest of it doesn't impress me especially if you already have a KLH of that era. I do understand however that you probably have equipment as good or better than what you passed up THAT YOU'RE NOT USING, which is another way of saying let someone else have a SCROE, someone for whom it will be something special!:thmbsp:

I would have probably grabbed the A40s. Nice little buggers, and the surrounds aren't that expensive.

wow...you feelling it too

I just posted something similar...this hobby is dangerous...Glad I am not alone...:D

I'm the same way now-days. Unless have a specific purpose in mind for the gear, e.g. a system for a friend, or the shop, I will pass it up. My main system has reached a point where improving the sound is difficult without significant expenditure. When I first started this hobby I would get excited over every piece of half-way decent vintage audio I saw in a thrift or on CL.

I still occasionally pick things up for a flip if I see a potential to make a few bucks from fixing it up and listing it on CL. I could see myself picking up the A40s for $12.99, spending $15 on new surrounds, and selling them for $50. I would get refoaming practice, make enough money for a new record, and the buyer would walk away with a nice set of speakers for a fair price. Though, I'm a special kind of weirdo who looks for excuses to spend time at the workbench.

I have a set of the A40 (Series II). I have a set of KLH Six, but the 38's are different. As letting others have a scroe, my crap is valueless to the AK crowd. I only like stuff that is utterly unloved.

I had to go to AA ( Audio anonymous) before I could walk away. Just playing, maybe not that much money but you don't have to feel like you just spent money on gear you really don't need. Good job at self control Wigwam Jones.
