Thrift rat
Today's scores and misc rambling...

Had the thrift store on my to do list today. Alas, my migraine got in the way so it was 14.30 before I got there. First thing I noticed was a poster 'all hifi and TV 50% off'. Nice.

So I got a nice old Dual amp for EUR 5 (solid state, all DIN connectors), an as-new Philips CD480 for 2.50 and a reel of 3M tape in vgc for 0.25 Nice!
I was too late to catch a set of brand-new looking B&W V202 for 12.50 D@mn, I would've loved those....

Anyway, I went down to the storage unit to pick up some stuff I needed and decided to take a pic of the old Philips tube radio (no sound but does light up) I was given a while ago. It's a Bakelite unit and I love the looks.

Philips CD480, lovely-sounding player!

Mine isn't quite this immaculate- missing two of the alu caps on the knobs.

That radio is a similar sort of style to my GRUNDIG 4019 (Pics here - not mine). I was given it in exchange for a turntable. It's my only bit of tube gear. I found it needed some new valves, but when replaced, it sounded good.

That looks good, love the wood cabinet.

A friend of mine is into tube stuff, I'll let him take a look to see if it's repairable. I also have a newer Grundig tube radio somewhere, which still worked when I put it in storage years ago. That was my parents' first radio, bought used when they married in 1962. Five years later they bought a Philips turntable, amp and speakers which were consequently passed on to me when I was about eight years old. I still have those somewhere, and they still work...

So I apparently need to visit this thrift a couple of times every week, especially when they do a 50% off on all stereo equipment...

Found a set of small KEF K-series speakers today. Foam replaced by (colour matched :) ) duct tape, some small (easily removable) specks of white emulsion paint on the cabinets but otherwise OK. Cost me EUR 5, and they will be my first victims for refoaming 101. If that doesn't work out, the tweeters will be worth EUR 5...

(mine don't look this nice, unfortunately)

You're lucky to have a good thrift store. The thrift stores where I live seem to only sell things like half-burnt candles and chipped up coffee cups.

Yeah, I'm lucky. If I go past the candles and the chipped coffee cups, pass a few boxes of semi-destroyed toys and take a right I find all kinds of nice stuff. Still PO'ed that I didn't get there earlier last weekend and missed out on the immaculate B&W speakers for EUR 12.50...

lol. Yeah, I forgot the semi-destroyed toys. Although, last week I did get lucky and find a pretty good pair of old TV rabbit ears that might make a good FM antenna.

Yeah, I'm forever looking for antennae but they never seem to have any.

Tried another thrift over lunch today. They had a TEAC cassette deck that looked very nice but I guess it needed belts. With hindsight I should've taken it home for only 3.50. I did get a superb Yamaha Natural Sound tuner, the TX-580RDS. Looks to be pretty high-end, not a mark on it and still a single-digit price. I just couldn't let it sit there, had to take it home even though I really don't need another tuner.

They also had a nice JVC direct drive TT which looked to be pretty high end, but the headshell had broken off the tone arm. Not ready for repair jobs of that magnitude yet. Other stuff, all marked as 'hobby' (= defective) was an Aristona RtR, sister of my old Philips, a hugeass Sony projector, ditto LCD TV (fuzzy picture), nice late '70s-early '80s Sony rack with tuner and cassette deck but missing the amp (would've snagged it otherwise!), an old Telefunken portable VCR, two-piece with a separate tuner, and recorder, a Video 2000 recorder, Sharp linear tracking TT w/o the stylus and much more. I really need to take a good look next week.

Still everything on 50% sale, found a VERY nice pair of small Yamaha NX-E700 speakers. Piano gloss black housings in decent shape (slight scratches, easily repairable).

So what did you pay? ;)

You've got a good supply of goods at your thrift(s) for NL, I find something nice once a year tops.

The speakers were 7.50. Decent deal, I think. :)

I'm surprised by the amount of nice discoveries here. Makes me think I could spend my upcoming unemployment sourcing cheap stuff and flipping it...

Also found a Sony centre speaker for EUR 5, couldn't leave that behind either.

Went checking out the vinyl collection, but found nothing worthwhile. No more 50% off, but I did see a really nice vintage Sony receiver in what looked to be superb shape for EUR 25 and a set of Bose 301 series III, also EUR 25. Took the Boses for a friend, who really likes the 2.2 series II I got him earlier but was looking for a second pair. I guess the 2.2 are now going to be the second pair, the 301 sound pretty good.
Other interesting stuff: set of Jamo CBR 903 needing foam for EUR 20 and a set of Acoustic Audio speakers, which looked to be white van material- and on review they are indeed.

it occurs that you may be the reigning prince of Netherlands thrift scores. And oddly enough, I also got my paws on one of those Philips cdps (last week). Very sweet sounding, and now reads anything post eye cleansing. But man that pile of stuff youve been runnning across....

Thanks! Currently listening to the Yamaha speakers- what a find! They're replacing the Interaudio 1000s on my T-amp, very open and clear sound with no exaggerations. Excellent bass response for such small speakers, not really sensitive but when you open up the volume they really sing! The solid construction makes for no unwanted vibrations and they sound really tight at high volumes. I've spent some time cleaning and polishing them, which makes all the difference for their looks.

The Bose 301s are pretty decent too, they cleaned up nicely after some polishing (car wax works great!) and they sound a lot better than the 2.2 series II and the 205s I had earlier (and sold on as well). It's still not my kind of sound, but pretty nice nevertheless and they don't tire me instantly like the smaller Boses.

The Philips is currently my CD player of choice. It sounds very nice, a little less harsh than some of my other players and it seems to do better on CD-Rs than the Sony.

Spent my lunch money at the thrift a couple of towns over. Not going to brag with the nice prices, but I got four LPs (Cheap Trick - At Budokan, Joan Armatrading - Show some emotion, Joan Armatrading - How cruel, Godley & Creme - Ismism), a pair of Wharfedale Denton 1s, a nice and fully functioning '70s Akai cassette deck, an even nicer '70s Teac cassette deck that shuts off as soon as you hit play but otherwise looks in excellent condition (might just need belts) and an Aristona RtR that's the twin of my Philips and might yield all the spare parts I need, or just replace mine. I love this stuff, I get hours and hours of tinkering time for peanuts! I'll post pics later, stashed all the stuff in the car and will take it home tonight.

Also got some stuff at GW's today; HiFi Internationals 10"/3"/1" (Philips), unknown speakers that looked possibly interesting (bullet tweeter) and LP's (Bowie's Heroes, etc)...I feel I need to stop buying stuff that has no potential of being a keeper..

But man, you're on a serious hoarding tour! ;)

I am.... might sell some stuff off eventually though (and give some to friends). Those HiFi Ints sound like a two-way speaker I used to own, very nice indeed.

I just love messing with the stuff... cleaning it up, testing it etc. And can you resist a nice shiny undamaged '70s cassette deck, in full working order for EUR 3? :)

Some stock pics of the stuff I found:

If you EVER run across a huge, ugly grey or olive drab radio that says "Rohde & Schwarz Kurzweill Empfanganger EK-07", & they only want 5 or even 10 euros for it-GRAB IT !! Those are like the Creme De La Creme of the shortwave world....But it weighs 150 lbs, it'll take 2 men & a boy to carry it. Fortunately, there are 4 grab-handles on the case...
