Pioneer's Dark Side

I've been trying for a few months now to get another Sansui 9090 (wait for it, a Pioneer connection is coming real soon) to replace the one that died on me.
Well, all that I have had the opportunity to purchase is Pioneer receivers. The most recent one being the SX-5580 pictured below. I also own its American brother the SX-1050 that is pulling the main duty until the right 9090 comes around. Since owning the 1050 I have come to really respect the Pioneer vintage line of receivers. They are well made, beautiful looks and the sound is just superb. But I just love the sound of the Sui's better, we all have our favorites. Just thought I would share a few pics of it since I really haven't seen that many around in my short search about them.

It's just so hard to consider how they could justify BPC after something like that. Very nice. :thmbsp:

Damn that's clean.

It was pretty clean when I got it. I only spent about an hour polishing it up.

Sweet! Is the wood naturally black or is it painted?

A previous owner decided it would look good if he spray painted it black. It took me another hour or so to sand all the paint off. Since I really suck @ veneering I went with a laminate vinyl (Black Ash) to finish the case up. Which took another hour or so. The wood (MDF?) underneath is in great shape, maybe the next owner can take it back to its natural state.

Just gorgeous.... Don't know why they never sold the black face in the U.S.A.

If you ever want to part with it let me know....

I really like the black ash finish!, I have been thinking about giving such a finish to my 5590 as well, but decided not to do so, since the original black vinyl finish is still good.

The black units are great lookers, especially the 5590 has my personal preference, here's a lineup:

BTW, I sold all but one; the 5590, I decided to change the "focus" of my collection.

Wow!!.......Here I thought I was the only one with a set of the Decor5 speakers! Gotta love the Pioneer "formal" attired gear!:D

Wow. I'd like one SX-5580 to go, please. That is very nice.

I've always thought the black euro models would look even better with some Walnut trim. Try swapping out the case with your 1050, then we might have a winner for best looking receiver of all time. Apologies to the silver crowd....

That black-on-black just looks stunning!

I got a Marantz receiver for which someone had stained the walnut case black. It was a 2252, which has a black dial face set in a chrome faceplate. The combination of black areas with silver in-between, much like on your Pioneer (but in slightly different ratios) is pretty stunning, period.

Wish I could find some of those black-faced Pioneers around here. Plenty of black 'Sui stuff, but so far all the Pioneer SXs I've found have been silver-fronted. They look nice, of course, but it sure would be nice to have some black stuff, too!

Damn that's clean.

SURE IS! :scratch2: Of course, we know when EW says something is clean, it is practically sterile... we've seen pics of how he routinely cleans things!

Yes, it's a real shame that "they don't make them like they used to". Well, maybe a few brands like McIntosh still do, but I can't afford to collect those, new! {Could barely afford 'em, used...:sigh:} :D
