By all means, it was later replaced by CX-630, its a good pre amp with solid phono section and quite neutral.

Witch Yamaha pre did you have before and do you still have it?

The thing is that the CX-600/50 belongs at the bottom of Yamaha's pre food chain, it compares to the CX-630, C-45, C-40 and C-6. I do not know how it compares sound wise against the others, but if you plan to use a TT with the pre. Then I would recommend going for a C-60, witch is still cheep but in a different league than the earlier mentioned pre's.

About cheep; what is cheep to me, might not be it to you. So think about what other pre's you can get for the amount you have to pay for the CX-600 and then see witch is the better pre. It might be one of the more "cheep" Yamaha's, but it still was a $450 pies of gear and properly best in class.

A small note to not North Americans; The CX-600 and 800 is in Europe called CX-50 and 70.

Before I owned the CX-1000 and CX-1, I had a CX-630, constructionwise, performance and spec wise, it matched my CX-1000 more or less, except it was around $340 and my CX-1000 was around $1100, of course when it came to features, the CX-1000 justified its high cost, Yamaha has always given out good components in their lower chain of items as well, only thing they would take off is the features.

The 1000 has more than few knobs, heavier construction, a high quality DAC, video input, better shielding etc. sonically and spec wise, the 630 and 1000 are quite close, having heard and owned them both, can well attest to that.

I am just a bit puzzled, I tested the C-85 against the CX-1000 and C-2x. Here I had no dought, the CX-1000 left the C-85 in the dust and was only out classed by the C-2x with a small margin.

So If you're and my obsevations are correckt, then it really dossent matter if you buy the best Yamaha pre ever in normal produktion (the CX-10000 was only very limited) or the cheepst; the sound is about the same :scratch2:

The CX-630 held pretty well against the CX-1000 when CDP inputs were used, in TT section, the CX-1000 showed its superiority, also some music with subtle passages sounded a bit more clearer with the 1000, apart from that, my ears detected no difference unless the superior DAC in CX-1000 was used which was basially a no contest.

I have a MX-600 and a CX-600 that are like new. Last week I got the opportunity to exchange both for a C-4 and M-4 adding only $ 300
Am I going to listen a big difference or it is not worth the money ?
I primarily use it for a turntable and a reel to reel recorder.

This is an old thread but there is some seriously inaccurate information and bashing of the CX600. First of all I've tried the CX600 and CX1000 side by side and for analog in/out you will not be able to hear any difference. The specs back that up as well. The CX1000 had much more circuitry for digital in and very good DACs. Also, lumping the CX600 and CX800 together and is ridiculous. First the CX800 is basically a C60/65 with remote control capability and better heat sinking on the voltage regulators. But, the CX800s failure rate is very high due to board and solder joint problems. Not a lot of them still working, that were used often. The CX830 is completely different. The CX600 is NOT the bottom of the barrel. My opinion is that it is a fantastic bargain if you don't need the DACs of the MX1000. But the CX600 can take some digital signals, but not as sophisticated digitally. I would not recommend at C60/65 over them for analog, unless the phono circuits are better. I don't do much vinyl at all, so I can't comment on that. If the CX600 complaints above were for phono in (only), I think that should be stated more clearly.
