Barbie : What's the deal?

Mystic

We're all born mad
I have read "paid" reviews and a few "open mic" ramblings, yet still have any solid sense of this thing.

Has anyone @ AK watched this film? If yes, care to offer an opinion?

I wonder how many here would even think about seeing this quasi cartoon if it wasn't on the media's endless list of "controversial" subjects? Smellywood doesn't even try to make GOOD movies anymore. They can now sell just as much by making cheap and bad movies that have controversial undertones.

I'll post what I wrote in another thread.

My niece, 12 or 13, watched it and told me every guy in the movie seems like they had a lobotomy. They are either stupid, an asshole, or both. None of them including Ken have any real redeeming qualities.

Not sure why people are complaining about it though. The actors and actresses were doing everything but calling it a feminist manifesto during the press rounds till Warner came out and said no it's not.

My favorite part of everything so far is everyone jumping on Elon Musk for the you'll pass out comment but none of the articles blasting him will say how many times the movie actually says "patriarchy". So I'm guessing they do say it a lot.

Personally though. I knew from the beginning the movie wasn't for me. So I'm not going to watch it and I don't care who does.

Indigo Girls were on PBS radio yesterday (Closer to Fine is used three times), and they said they were OK with it being somewhat "subversive", and said they did like the movie.

any "controversy" is just to get people talking, and get folks into the theatres again, so I'll pass.
Truth is, it should be on Pay channels in 6 months or a year and I can certainly wait.
I expect it will be mildly amusing in places, so no urgency there.

I hope she wasn't criticizing the movie in front of all the six year old girls. And certainly not with language like that.

I haven't seen it. Sounds like a very smart girl. Looking at promo photos I'd say Barbie is cast as an airhead and Ken as an airhead in transition. That's just my impression of course. I think Hjames is right, it's about getting people to talk about it, steering it along. I'll look for a DVD in the thrift store when time comes.

Not sure why it would matter where she was. And I'm not there to police someone's language.

She seems to be. Hopefully she keeps it up. She's hitting that I hate everyone phase and finding her own thing. Which for some reason means she talks to me a lot more and wants to hang out. Her taste in music is great too. She's even introduced me to groups like Wet Leg.

I saw a Barbie movie when my daughter was six. Decent animation. But I don't remember "talking about it". Barbie was a princess in some utopia IIRC. That was a "dad" thing I did. Now Sponge Bob is a whole different story - that was pure genius.

Wet Leg... not going to ask. :) Honestly though, she trusts you, a big responsibility.

Yeah. You're there to be her friend. You should go to the movie with her and you can both swear and bond. You might get shushed by one of the six year old's moms.

Spongebob is absolutely one of the most unexpected, genius and fun things that came out of getting children. I sat down and watched it with the kids and I'm sure I found it at least as fun as they did. :D
