Good place to buy vinyls online?

I'm looking to expand my collection but I don't know where to start online. I know good places to start are local stores, but our stores are way overpriced. I live in Asheville, NC and it's a big hippy/tourist epicenter in WNC--record shops are popular here because it's kind of a retro town. Subsequently, most albums run $10-$30. (However I did snag the Steve Howe Album for $3)

I'd like something cheaper!

Thoughts?

well, of course there is eBay but that is getting kinda stupid lately $-wise. Suprisingly my new secret is Amazon. No, im not talking new Lps (although they now have an entire section there for NEW VINYL!), but the resellers there. I found the Harry Connick Jr '20' Lp there for under $11 WITH shipping, and on eBay that title commands anywhere from $20-$30 delivered.

So FWIW you could check out a few titles that interest you there and hopefully some reseller will have a copy! I would have never thought of Amazon for used vinyl, but I guess you learn something new every day.

Otherwise, hit some pawn shops in the city. They cant stand having vinyl on a shelf so you might find a few gems for cheap there, but youll have to wade through 1-200 jim reeves Lps to find em.

I am repeating myself, but please refrain from referring to these precious things as 'vinyls'.
Plural of 'vinyl' is 'vinyl'.

MODERATOR NOTE:

2 totally inappropriate posts have been deleted from this thread. Any more posts of that nature will result in time-outs.

Audiogon has alot of Vinyl and condition is mostly a non-issue as far as proper grade of condition. Most there are music and gear lovers who take care of their items. If you ever want info on sellers who give great deals and are always honest PM me......I find many albums for under $5.

It you want to buy inexpensive items online, you could try the recordcollectorsguild.org.

The methods of doing business there are a bit informal, but there are some good deals because it doesn't cost anything to post lists of items for sale. You can also post your want list, but few people seem to post long lists, it's mostly specific records.

I mentioned this one on another thread (no affiliation):

http://gemm.com/

It works as a kind of umbrella for thousands of different shops and sellers all over the world. Given that you can find practically anything here and that there are multiple copies of many albums, you can pretty much pick and choose price-wise. As I mentioned elsewhere, I've used it for over a decade and must have spent a scary amount of money on records in that time...
Happy hunting.

Some record shops have shifted to auctions aswell as store sales to sell used Vinyl, there is a place in PA that sends you a monthly mailing and you bid what you are willing to pay then its mailed to the winner. When I shop there more than once the owner said if it wasnt for the monthly auction he couldnt be in business.

I'll let you guys in on a little secret here in Dayton. Every November Planned Parenthood has a large used book sale that also features scads of used albums of every imaginable artist and genre. I know personally because I usually load each and every one of those 200+ boxes of albums onto the tables during setup (oh my aching back!).

These are donations from people's personal collections, and every one is priced at $1.00, with $0.25 on Sunday. So it's worth your while if you're nearby to plan on a trip down for it next November.

IF you become a subscriber here at AK the classifieds are a good source. There is also craigslist, thrift stores and we cannot forget the best of all garage/estate sales.

Have fun.

WHAT 13 Posts and NO ONE thinks to mention AK Sponsor where we all get 10% off Soundstage Direct?????????? WHO's link is at the bottom of the main forums page as well as the front page......

I'm ashamed. Seth has the best customer service and as good of price for new LP's as any where on the Net. And if there's a problem you will likely get a phone call from him BEFORE you even no there's a problem.

GO FORTH AND CHECK OUT Soundstage direct.

+1 on becoming an AK subscriber and checking out the classifieds. Some good to stuff to be found there from fellow AK'rs. And subscribing here helps pay for this fine site.

Record Shows can be a good place to find $1 bargains to fill out your collection. I see shows listed in April in Greensboro and Raleigh, NC here:

Look at the banners at the bottom -- SoundStageDirect is awesome. Click that banner whenever you buy so part of the $ goes to AK. :D

I have also found sellers on AK classifieds to be a fantastic source. I've gotten a dozen great records that way over the last couple months.

I got hundreds of classical LPs from a single seller on CL all in real good condition. I think that's a good way to increase your collection fast. Also got a stack of older records on freecycle but that is pretty darn rare around here.

There may be some local record stores in your town.

There are other places online but haven't tried 'em yet.

I buy solely on ebay from the UK mainly but I think you get what you pay for a highly sought after classic LP in mint condition isn't gonna be cheap anywhere:no: I will however try Amazon after reading the post from above. Thanks for the tip.

The last new LP I bought was in Asheville a couple months back, some place downtown near The Orange Peel, when I went to see Iron & Wine. I also got a used Stan Freberg LP in wonderful condition at Mr. Ks Used Books, which was off the beaten path and had reasonable prices (but lots of dreck to look through).

There's no place here in the Tri-Cities (TN/VA) that I know of that sells new vinyl. Our Mr. Ks in Johnson City no longer has used records, and the other place I regularly shopped for used records (Dad's CDs and DVDs, near ETSU) has recently shut down.

I've recently ordered LPs from both SoundStageDirect and Amazon. Amazon has no idea how to pack an LP, and I am fortunate it arrived in good condition. My SoundStageDirect order took a good long time (the release date on a pre-ordered item kept getting pushed back) but Seth was great to deal with and the order was packed very well. If I order new LPs again it will be from them.
