The NEW 'Post a picture of yourself' Thread

You need to be guarded? Or is just that what they're called.
These are two of the six we have staffed across three buildings. The fella on the left (looking at photo) is from the desert region of Samburu. The young guy on the right is from the highlands of Samburu. Both are Maasai moran (warriors), as are the other four. (photo taken this morning around 10:30 am Nairobi Time)

Um, I don't recognize the mzungu standing between the Maasai.

Yesterday was New (to me -- it is an artifact of some age) SAEE [sA-ee] Day in Nairobi.

The saee is a beaded band one wears at wrist, forearm, upper arm, and various parts of one's legs. While often assumed to be a Maasai ornament in traditional Maasai lands of Narok and Mara (mostly in Tanzania now), the saee is worn as well by the Samburu in their region well-north of Nairobi and the Mount Kenya plateau. The particular style of saee I donned -- for forever, as once placed it is never to be removed -- is @ my left wrist. I'll probably get another, for my right wrist, but custom-made by Samburu Maasai who operate a sort of All Things Samburu Maasai kiosk business in the (slum) community Kariokor. We'll walk to this kiosk on Friday or Saturday. I'd take a video except my mere presence will cause a huge stir and to be video-ing the experience would only add greater fervor to the excitement, so... ain't gonna do that.

Anyway, let's get on to a couple of New Saee Day photos.

New Saee Day -- Photo 2 : Apaiya (that is I) with Lalesheli (my brother -- he's married so not a moran / son) ...

Oh, and I am wearing also the military police "lightweight" boots I grabbed @ summer of 2025 while working for a spell at Rammstein (U.S.) Air Base in Krautland. They'll never replace by beloved fullyleather + steel reinforced toe cap and heel Paratrooper pair (GI to me @ spring 1979) but those weigh ~ 2.5 lbs per boot ... that gets tiresome, y'know, for every-day strolling about. Greatfor working out is though, they add ~ 5 lbs to my body-weight so such movements as pull-ups are more effective.
