Yesterday was New (to me -- it is an artifact of some age) SAEE [sA-ee] Day in Nairobi.
The saee is a beaded band one wears at wrist, forearm, upper arm, and various parts of one's legs. While often assumed to be a Maasai ornament in traditional Maasai lands of Narok and Mara (mostly in Tanzania now), the saee is worn as well by the Samburu in their region well-north of Nairobi and the Mount Kenya plateau. The particular style of saee I donned -- for forever, as once placed it is never to be removed -- is @ my left wrist. I'll probably get another, for my right wrist, but custom-made by Samburu Maasai who operate a sort of All Things Samburu Maasai kiosk business in the (slum) community Kariokor. We'll walk to this kiosk on Friday or Saturday. I'd take a video except my mere presence will cause a huge stir and to be video-ing the experience would only add greater fervor to the excitement, so... ain't gonna do that.
Anyway, let's get on to a couple of New Saee Day photos.
