Altec 605b Duplex, now what?

Those turned out really nice, marantzfan. Now that it's cooled off a little, I'm champing at the bit to build some cabs for the 604Es that I dug out of an attic.
Time to make some sawdust.

Nice job, Anthony!
Yeah, I don't know how you get anything done down there in Phoenix, in the summer. I passed through there last month and the temp was 95f at midnite. My Nephew reported that it was cooler than average. Talk about sweat equity....:D

Looking good, love to hear your thoughts on how they sound and any tweaks you might have for the cabinets.

Plan to veneer them at some point?

Bobabode, any progress on what you're planning for your cabs? That story of how you found and pulled the drivers was just freakin' awesome. And within 50 miles of me too!

The cabinets are beautiful.

Maybe he has now listened to them and found that the 605s have no high end and is busy modifying them for tweeters.

Quite the contrary; I've been listening more this last week than I have in the last couple of months. I REALLY like these speakers, top to bottom. I'd like to see if I can coax a little bit more low end out of them which I think I can do by trying some different tubes.

Soon I will take some pictures of them in my living room and post a more detailed review but long story short; these are the finest speakers I have ever owned and have been an absolute game changer.

The cabinets are built with furniture grade Red Oak plywood so no need to veneer. :)

the "no highs" comment is no different than my periodic bashing of the Klipsch Cornwall and the McIntosh MC-2100

De gustibus non est disputandum

;-)

That's just the review I was hoping for. Thanks, Marantzfan.

From all that I've read, Altecs are hands down the best. I may have to unload my Vandie Three's once I build Billfort's design (9 cubic foot, corner design) for those rescued 604Es. Maybe not....:scratch2: I could just get rid of the couch and end tables.

They are built like a tank, and made to last. However, even as an owner, I have to say tech has advanced enough to where there is better.

No doubt there is better out there but I think it's the pointsource presentation that has me intrigued and they'll match up to my tube amps, hopefully.:thmbsp:

Gonna throw up a post on a 4 yr old thread... just snagged a pair of these locally for $500 in a trashed pair of cabinets! Will be building in a very similar fashion but using 18mm Baltic birch leftover from s big project. Very stoked and thanks for documenting your build so well!
